YES Herald - Supplemental - 12/26/14

Hello Third Graders!

I hope you're having a great vacation! The last two days of weather have been fantastic. I hope you've had a chance kt get outside and enjoy it.

This is only a supplemental issue because due to some technical issues, all the hard work that Mrs. Sinclair and out Bloggers of the Week put into our last issei has been lost. My apologies, and shame on the blogger app! Here's a quick, yet woefully inadequate, supplemental update.

Math

We finished unit 5! Well done Mathemagicians. We wrapped up our Unit 5 assessment on Thursday, covering very large and very small numbers. We now know (or are at least still learning) place value from the thousandths place all the way up to the millions. Great math brains!

Writing

We've just dipped our toes into the world of realistic fiction. So far we're gathering some ideas from our personal narratives and getting set to really dig in. After break we'll be writing more and talking about fiction structures like leads and the story mountain!

Reading

We continue to solve literary crimes! Our Mystery Series Unit is a hit so far. We've Sussex out motives, dusted for clues, examined alibis, and said "no thanks" to a few offers of red herring. We'll keep at it after break.

Geography

We continue to explore the world through Google Earth, maps, Time for Kids, and other venues. We too a sneak peak at the country book selection from the library, to start thinking about a country to research. I am also hoping you had some time to look at the Heritage Night information that was sent home, and maybe even got to talk to some relatives/ancestors this vacation about family traditions! Heritage night will be here before you know it, so get started now!

Read-Math-a-Game-a-Thon!

From my perspective Friday's RMGT was a super success! It's not often that I can consider pajamas to be professional attire. Our class looked great, and everyone seemed very comfy. After morning meeting and gym we spent some time working away at the Sumdog Holiday Contest. When we came in from recess everyone got Hot Chocolate and then we started in on our math themed games. I saw Stratego, Blokus, Hey! That's My Fish, No Thanks, as well as a few more. Way to use those math brains in an applied setting! After lunch we got out mats from the gym, took out stuffed animals and pillows, and settled in for a quiet, calming afternoon of reading. What a great way to get ready for a long brain break. Before leaving we watched an episode of Scooby Doo mysteries (that pesky Red Herring showed up again, and lo and behold, he didn't do it this time either!), and Mrs. Sinclair shared a healthy snack of popcorn and oranges.

That's about it for now! Make sure to keep reading and logging, and at least play a few math-y games so your brain isn't complete mush when we get back in January!

Have fun and see you soon,
Mr. Abbott
